Joseph Bernard (Barney) Walton, Jr. was relieved of his pain and went to be with our Lord on Friday, March 19, 2021. He died in Muncie, IN, comforted and surrounded with love by his wife Suzie. Barney was born to Joseph Bernard Walton and Frances Pendlebury Walton on February 22, 1934. From the time he was a child, Barney was passionate about helping others. As a six-year-old, he sold his mom’s vegetables from a red wagon with wooden slats on it. He would reminisce about this as he occasionally came across that wagon online. With that project and others, he always gave his earnings to his mother to use for the family. When he was 10, the family moved to New Jersey, and New Jersey became a part of Barney. He lived in Lawrence Harbor, NJ until 1954 when he came to Indiana to attend Ivy Tech Vocational School in Fort Wayne, where he studied Engineering. In 1951, Barney became a Seaman in the United States Navy. His tour of duty included serving in the Korean War on an aircraft carrier. He was a Radar and Sonar Operator in addition to playing the trumpet for bugle calls. One of his proudest moments came in 2019 when he was part of Indy Honor Flight #29 for military veterans. He traveled to Washington, DC and enjoyed viewing national memorials and monuments and witnessing the Changing of the Guard at Arlington National Cemetery. Barney and his wife Suzie traveled to Florida in April of 1988, getting married along the way in Virginia on May 2. Barney and Suzie lived in Florida until 2001 when they returned to Indiana. While in Florida, he fulfilled a lifelong dream of having his own business, starting Classic Monogramming. Both he and Suzie had great fun with it. They enjoyed golfing whenever the chance arose; Suzie has fond memories of how Barney taught her to play golf. Barney had a multitude of friends and family from New Jersey, Indiana and Florida, and places in-between. A salesman all his life, he made friends wherever he went. His list of interests and accomplishments, in addition to the Florida years, included gardening (becoming a Master Gardener), real estate (licensed realtor for many years), oil painting and woodworking. Lovely renditions of nature on canvas fill his home, and his yard was always a blank canvas for his creative spirit. Most recently, he was learning to play the guitar on his own. All of these things he did with his partner and love of nearly 33 years, his wife Suzie. They traveled, became entrepreneurs, gardened, lived their faith and spread joy through their artistic talents, faith and love for their family and friends. Barney’s family was his passion, and he lived each day loving his children, wife Suzie and extended family to the fullest. The deaths of 3 of his children deeply grieved him, and he relied on his surviving sons, his wife and strong family, faith and friends to lift him up. Central to his life was always his love of God and his belief in Christ, with his faith forming his daily life. He and Suzie attended New Day Baptist Church in Muncie, and they became his faith family. Barney was preceded in death by three of his children, George P. Walton (2013), Joseph B. Walton II (2020), and Victoria J. (Walton) Snyder (2017); his brother William Walton; and his brother-in-law Gary Fuller. He is survived by his wife Suzanne (Clemons) Walton; sons Daniel A. and Thomas E.; stepchildren Karen (Don) Ritter and John Cady; sister Dorothy Fuller; sister-in-law Isabelle Walton; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at New Day Baptist Church, 100 S. Holland St., Muncie IN, on Saturday March 27, at 3:00 pm, with calling from 1 – 3 pm. The service will also be live-streamed on Facebook through New Day Baptist Church-Muncie. Donations may be made to New Day Baptist Church or a charity of your choosing in his name.
