John Edward Jenkins, Jr. was born July 16, 1929 in Patterson, New Jersey. He was the son of John Sr. and Mamie Jenkins. He was an avid golfer and loved to travel. He enjoyed swimming, singing, dancing, CARDS!!, writing poetry and songs. He worked as a life guard, bellboy, waiter and bus driver as he attended Podiatry and then Medical School. John met the love of his life Rose Elizabeth Smart and was married May 21, 1954. They shared a mutual love of dancing and singing, forming a family quartet and dancing around the house often. May 21 of this year would have been their 65th wedding anniversary. John attended Fisk University then Podiatry school in Cleveland, Ohio; opened his own office of podiatry first in Grand Rapids, Michigan 1955-1962. He later attended Howard University to become a Medical Doctor and did his residency in Washington DC. Moving to Indianapolis, he was a company doctor for Western Electric. Opened a weight loss clinic and had a private practice on Central Avenue as a family doctor and podiatrist from 1969~1995 from which he retired. John was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses in 1972. He was a member of North, Kessler and Riverside congregations where he served as an Elder for over 40 years, until his death. John Edward Jenkins fell asleep in death on April 12, 2019. Just shy of 90 years old. He was preceded in death by his parents and 2 sisters. John is survived by his wife Rose; 2 daughters, Glenda D. Barnett (Walter “Tony”); Sandra L. Townsend (Albert); son, Norman C. Jenkins; 2 grandchildren, Aaron Townsend (Diamond)and Stephanie Jett(Jason); 2 great grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.
