After an acute illness, Michael Patrick Greene passed away surrounded by family on July 9, 2019. Mike was born July 11, 1954 in Minneapolis MN. He grew up and raised his family in Indianapolis. He was proud to be a veteran and served in the Navy straight out of high school. He graduated from the police academy in 1984 and served the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department for 26 years, including the SWAT team and the mounted patrol. He was deeply motivated to protect and serve and he loved his job. He met his loving wife, Marilyn in 2009. They married in a private ceremony in Gatlinburg, Tennessee surrounded by the beautiful mountains on October 30, 2012. They have enjoyed many great jokes, trips, meals and shows together. He was devoted to Marilyn and she brought him so much joy. He enjoyed fishing, history, the outdoors, animals, travel, and cooking. He was a passionate patriot and very involved in memorializing the sailors who perished in the USS Indianapolis naval disaster. He felt a deep connection to his Irish roots. He hated tuna noodle casserole and he loved his family. He knew the words to every Travelling Wilburys, Bob Dylan, and Elvis song. He’s never encountered a position he couldn’t debate and thoroughly enjoyed the mental exercise. He also loved a good prank and found just the right groups of friends to indulge this cheeky sense of humor—especially on the police force. Mike was an extremely generous man, a loyal friend, a loving husband, a proud parent and a doting grandfather. We will miss his easy conversation, his Caesar salad, his warm hugs, and the way he always showed up for us, every time we needed him.A memorial service celebrating his life will be held on Tuesday July 16 at the FOP Hall on1525 Shelby St, Indianapolis, IN 46203 at 4:00pm. Immediately following will be a reception for visitation. His father Francis, brother Edward, a beloved aunt Paddy and daughter Diana preceded him in death. He is survived by wife Marilyn, Daughters Jennifer (Edward) Gustafson, Natalie (Chase) Christy, step-children Neil Schaler and Nancy (Chase Brock) Schaler, sister Kate (husband Dick and son David) Vlach, and seven grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests sending memorial contributions to the Central Indiana Police Foundation to support officers and their families.
