Sandra Hunt Petty, age 73, of Greenwood, Indiana, passed away on Friday morning February 27, 2026, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Sandra was born in Indianapolis, Indiana on June 21, 1952, to her devoted father Myron and her loving mother Betty(Woods) Hunt.  Sandra was the big sister to Susan, Cindy and a brother, Billy.  With a family of four children there was never a dull moment!  Even at a young age Sandra emerged as a peacemaker and possessed this rare quality her whole life.

During her high school years Sandra attended Howe High School in Indianapolis.  She was very popular and considered “beautiful inside and out”.  Sandra and her friend Gary Hubbard were King and Queen candidates for the Brown and Gold dance.  She was also a member of the Girl’s Drill Team – a select group of girls chosen for their citizenship and scholastic accomplishments.

After graduating from Howe, Sandra earned a BS degree from Ball State University.  After graduating in 1974 she started teaching Health and Physical Education at Short Ridge High School.  Sandra attended night classes at Butler University and received her Master of Science degree in 1979.  She worked as a student counselor at Short Ridge High School and then became a dean of students at Howe High School eventually moving over to Tech High School.  Sandra always strived to be firm, fair and friendly to all the students.

Sandra married and had a beautiful baby girl, Beryl.  After working over 30 years in the school system she retired.  Sandra and Beryl relocated to Raleigh, NC in 2012 where she could be closer to her family.  She became a volunteer with Able to Serve in Garner, NC, a wonderful organization whose mission is to equip adults with disabilities to be independent and connect them with opportunities to serve others in their community.  Sandra worked on everything from fund raisers to the Special Olympics.  She was always ready and available to help with whatever they needed!

In 2024 Sandra moved back to the Indianapolis area settling in Greenwood.

Sandra loved to travel (especially to any beach!), boating and floating on the lake, snuggling with her sweet kitties (puppies too!), spending time with family and friends and having a hand in a good game of trumps!

Sandra’s great faith and love for her savior Jesus Christ was a source of strength, comfort, peace and joy for her.  Sandra’s kindness, generosity, patience, sense of humor together with her sweet smile were gifts that she was given and so sweetly shared.  Every moment spent with her was a blessing and will be cherished by all her family and friends.  Her courageous battle with cancer was unprecedented.  She was a warrior and has been a source of strength and hope for many.  Even in death her kindness and generosity continued as she donated tissue/blood to IU Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center for research, in hopes that she could help in finding a cure.

Sandra was predeceased by her father Myron Hunt, her mother Betty Hunt, her sister Susan Lynette, her sister Cindy Mayo and brother-in-law Phil Mayo.

Sandra is survived by her daughter Beryl Petty, her brother Billy Hunt and sister-in-law Suzanne Hunt, her brother-in-law Mike Lynette, her beloved companion  Bruce Moss, her nephews Steven Lynette (wife Leslie), Chris Lynette (wife Leslie), Nicholas Mayo (wife Karen) and Will Hunt (wife Nicole), her niece Angela Simonds, her great-nephews Larson Mayo and Hunter Simonds, great-nieces Hayley Lynette, Hannah Lynette, Hayden Lynette, Mayken Lynette, Kaylyn Mayo and Kylie Simonds.

It was Sandra’s wish to be cremated and have her family hold a celebration of life for her in the summer months at Myrtle Beach.
