May 26, 1929 – June 20, 2025

Margaret Louise “Maggie” Bromund, age 96, passed away peacefully in Indianapolis on June 20, 2025, at home. She was born on May 26, 1929, to Roscoe and Clara Jordan in Indianapolis.  She was a proud, lifelong resident of Indianapolis and graduated from Howe High School in 1947 and St. Vincent’s Diploma Nursing Program in 1950.   Maggie met Hugo F. “Hugh” Bromund at the Indiana Roof during the Big Band dance era.  Maggie and Hugh married on February 23,1952, in Irvington at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church.  They had seven children Fred, Carl, Paul, Jane, Anne, Dave, and Mark, as well as nine grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.

Maggie valued education and devoted herself to seeing that all her children earned college diplomas.  She also returned to higher education earning a Bachelor of Science in Education from Indiana University in 1978.  Her passion for nursing was demonstrated through decades of work in the Surgery Department at St. Vincent’s Hospital.  Maggie frequently shared meaningful stories of challenge, strength, and humor from those cherished days in the Operating Room.

Maggie lived her life in service to her family and others.  Maggie was a constant volunteer.  She willingly worked concessions, drove kids to youth sporting events and activities, coached softball, and raised funds for innumerable charities.  She served much time as a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church and was especially committed to the St. Vincent DePaul Thanksgiving and Christmas distributions with whom her children were also obliged to participate.  She later became a member of St. Pius Catholic Church. Her service to St. Vincent DePaul continued through her 70’s.

When Hugh developed dementia in the mid 1980’s, Maggie joined the small local Alzheimer’s family support group.  She became close with several like-minded women who together devoted themselves to help more impacted families and grow the group into a statewide organization.  Maggie’s nursing background and passion for education were keys to successful service as statewide Autopsy Chair. She was instrumental in Alzheimer’s Disease becoming an official code and a cause of death on State Death Certificates which is essential for accurate mortality data tracking and further medical research.  Maggie also served as Statewide Chair of the Alzheimer’s Association. She, and her like-minded friends, successfully lobbied in Washington DC for Alzheimer research and support funding including meeting and influencing then First Lady Barbara Bush.

Maggie’s filled her long life with her passions, favorite hobbies and social activities.  She devoted herself to raising her children and, later, was actively engaged in the upbringing of her grandchildren.  She enjoyed traveling with family and friends, spending winter months in Florida, gardening, sewing, scrapbooking, exercising, volunteering and watching her favorite sports teams.  She valued her Catholic faith and remained actively engaged in the Church throughout her life.  Eventually, Maggie slowed down and moved into an assisted living facility at age 85.  She enjoyed the friends she made and all the activities at Traditions of North Willow, but when the Covid pandemic struck, she moved into her daughter’s home where she spent her final years.  Her hallmark sense of humor and quick quips brought light and laughter to all and were present to the end.  Often one to fall asleep as her teams were playing their big games made for many laughs as she always reported them ultimately winning.  With a heat wave approaching, Maggie passed away on the summer solstice after watching the Pacers in game 6 of the NBA finals and will report to everyone they won the championship!  She was preceded in death by her husband Hugh, eldest son Fred, and brother Ken Jordan.

A Funeral Mass at Calvary Cemetery, 435 W. Troy Ave, Indianapolis, IN, will be Saturday, August 2, 2025, at 10:30 am. A graveside service will follow at 11 am. A wake to celebrate Maggie’s life will be held at a nearby location after the services.
