Masayoshi “Chuck” Endo, was diagnosed with stomach cancer at the end of March and despite valiant efforts to fight the disease, died on July 23, 2016. Chuck was born in the town of Kanayama, Gifu Prefecture, Japan, in 1942 and moved to the US in 1964. He met his adoring and adorable wife, Sally, while studying at the University of Wisconsin, Eau Claire. His entrepreneurial spirit brought him to Indianapolis where he started Ho-Tai Imports and later, Endo and Company Jewelers. Chuck had a fondness for the outdoors and all creatures of nature. Always playful and curious, Chuck enjoyed scuba diving, photography, and gardening. He also had a strong love for music and creativity which he showed best by being enthusiastically involved in his children’s artistic pursuits. Chuck will be remembered for his quirky sense of humor, pearly white smile and infectious laugh. He unabashedly sang whatever song was in his heart and whistled while making breakfast. Chuck is survived by his wife Sally, son Osho of NYC, and daughter Miya of Dixon, New Mexico.

I have only known Chuck a few years but he certainly touched my heart. He was a kind and generous spirit whom I will certainly miss. I offer prayers to Sally, Osho, & Miya of whom he always spoke fondly of. I know his memory will live on in the children at the dance studio. Words always fail when it comes to matters of the heart. So so sorry for your loss. Chuck was a very sweet, kind and caring man. He was always very sweet, to me. Loved talking about plants and different recipes. The heavens have Truly gained another Angel.

It was with great sadness that I leaned about Chuck’s passing. He was so much fun with a great sense of humor. Mike and I send our sincere condolences to you and your family
I have lost my dear, dear friend of many, many years. I will miss him greatly. I will miss his ready smile, and cheeky ways. I will miss his flamboyant cooking, his samurai style table tennis, his artful photography. We travelled together, we played together, we went to the track together. Chuck was always there when you needed him with a helping hand. A generous soul. Rest in peace my friend. You will always be in my thoughts.
Dear Sally and family,
I knew Chuck many years ago when I worked in downtown Indianapolis and he had Ho-Tai imports. I stopped in to see him every week, on pay day, making payments for things on lay-a-way or simply to pass some time laughing and chatting. I knew he was a man in possession of a kind heart and a great curiosity about the world. Years passed and I moved to another city, and Ho-Tai closed. I lost track of Chuck. I am happy to read that his life was filled with many adventures, and a family that brought him great joy in this life. To his family I offer my deepest, most sincere, condolences. To Masayoshi, as he sets off on his next great adventure, have fun, Chuck!
Oh…my dear Chuck. My heart rises up to meet yours. I don’t think there’s an angel up there with a bigger smile, nor a more exuberant laugh. You’ve touched and lifted up so many people; we are all better for having known you. Sending hugs and warmth and love and deepest sympathy to Sally, Osho, Miya, and all your family. You are deeply missed.

Dear Sally and Family,
I was so sorry to hear about Chuck. I knew him in the early days, when he and Mike ran their smaller store
across from the Greyhound Station on N. Illinois St. I loved Asian things, and soon had quite a little collection
of silk kimonos, dragon-decorated tea sets and sake cups. Some of these are still mine while others have been
passed down. What, also, are still mine, are the many happy memories of talking with the boys, spending time
with them. Chuck’s wonderful smile and happy way of life was always a joy to me, and I have wondered many
times where you all had gone after the shop closed. I hope Mike is still living (perhaps in Japan ?), and I’m glad, Sally, that you were there with Chuck. He loved you and his family so much. God bless you all, and
